Over the past decade, our criminal defense attorney in Washington D.C. and Maryland have witnessed the state and federal government’s crackdown on white-collar crimes firsthand.
With substantial increases in Ponzi Schemes and publicly aired fraud allegations, law enforcement is taking a hard line on theft, embezzlement, and other white-collar crimes across the country.
That means prosecutors are even more focused on making an example of those who are accused of these non-violent crimes through lengthy jail sentences and increased fines and/or restitution costs.
White-Collar Crimes and Conviction Penalties
Each person who is charged with a white-collar crime will face different penalties for a conviction, based on the unique circumstances of their case.
First, it depends on where the case is being heard, and whether the individual is facing state or federal charges. Each carries different sentencing guidelines for white-collar crime cases.
Next, it depends on the alleged crime.
Common white-collar crimes include, but are not limited to:
- Bribery
- Cybercrimes
- Embezzlement
- Forgery
- Identity Theft
- Insider Trading
- Insurance Fraud
- Money Laundering
- Ponzi Schemes
- Tax Evasion
- Theft
- Welfare Fraud
The penalties for white-collar offenses include, but are not limited to:
- Community Confinement
- Fines
- Forfeitures
- Home Detention
- Imprisonment
- Paying the Cost of Prosecution
- Restitution
- Supervised Release
Federal sentencing guidelines often result in longer prison sentences.
These financially motivated crimes can also lead to serious personal and professional repercussions for the accused and will require the help of an accomplished white-collar crime attorney in Washington D.C. and Maryland to reach the best outcome available for your unique case.
Federal Authorities are Cracking Down on White-Collar Crimes
The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced that it intends to pursue more individuals involved in white-collar and corporate crime.
U.S. Attorney General, Merrick Garland, said in a speech last month to the American Bar Association’s Institute on White Collar Crime, “Corporate crime weakens our economic institutions by undermining public trust in the fairness of those institutions.”
“To fail to aggressively prosecute corporate crime leads citizens to doubt that their government adheres to this principle. The Justice Department does not intend to fail,” he said.
“Accountability starts with the individuals responsible for criminal conduct,” Deputy Attorney General, Lisa Monaco said in a speech to a forum of the American Bar Association, “We will urge prosecutors to be bold in holding accountable those who commit criminal conduct.”
With a bolstered interest in pursuing the maximum penalties for white-collar crimes, our Maryland and Washington D.C. residents cannot afford to face these charges alone. We can help protect your rights from the investigation, arrest, and charging stages, so you can begin establishing your defense without delay.
