Earlier this month, the mayor of Fairfax, VA was arrested after he allegedly attempted to exchange drugs for sex with undercover detectives.
Mayor Richard Silverthorne was apprehended by the Fairfax City Police Department, and charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and felony distribution of methamphetamine.
In addition to Silverthorne’s arrest, Fairfax Police also apprehended two men in connection with the sting. Like Silverthorne, both men face misdemeanor possession and felony distribution charges and are entitled to professional legal representation to defend the charges made against them.
Just a few months ago, Mr. Silverthorne was elected to a third term as Fairfax’s mayor, despite facing a cancer battle, bankruptcy, and the loss of his civilian job. In the wake of his arrest, he offered his resignation and appointed a city councilman as acting mayor.
Drug Crime Defense
If you are facing drug charges, the most important first step to take is to consult with a qualified defense attorney. This is especially true if you are guilty of the charges against you – even if you are admitting guilt (to an attorney), there may be a defense available that addresses your situation in the most appropriate manner.
When dealing with any type of drug charge, it is important to have an attorney who understands, not only the laws in your state but also how to handle your case in a court setting.
The most common types of drug crimes that are seen in D.C. and other area courts include:
- Distribution of drugs
- Drug possession
- Possession of drugs with intent to distribute
- Conspiracy to distribute
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute
Typically, these drug offenses involve narcotics like cocaine, heroin, PCP, and MDMA (ecstasy). Although marijuana is also a common drug, recent changes to area drug laws have reduced possession of marijuana, to some extent, to a civil citation.
